Our Story
Coram Beanstalk started in 1973 when a group of determined and passionate women noticed children in London primary schools desperately needed more reading support.
The education board in London agreed to let them bring in volunteers to read to children at two schools, to help with the problem. The idea was a success. But it turned out that this problem wasn’t just in London, and by the early eighties, the programme was starting to be rolled out to primary schools across the country. And since then we’ve helped more than 250,000 children.
The beanstalk has now branched out, and we’re proud to say we now also offer programmes to young people at secondary school and early years children. This helps us to reach a wider age range, in a way that works for them.
Now Coram Beanstalk supports more than 7000 children with their reading at more than 500 schools, thanks to the support of their 1291 incredible volunteers.
